HRV: It’s OK if your heart beats faster when you’re in love

If you love Love that makes two of us!

Let’s talk about matters of the the "heart."

I recently had someone share in a new patient visit that he adapts well to stress. I believed him. In fact, his job as a first responder would require that! But I wondered what his nervous system would say about what was going on on the inside. When we ran a scan, it turned out that under an otherwise cool, calm demeanor, he had a nervous system that was stuck with the “foot on the gas,” and not so good at returning to a calm state, even if he seemed chill on the outside.

The technology we use to measure your adaptability is called Heart Rate Variability (HRV), and it works like a lie detector test. Skin temperature and skin conductance let you see for sure if your nervous system is in a calm state, and we use an FDA registered, class II medical device to measure your nervous system via subtle changes in the heart rhythm.

Heart Rate Variability is the gold standard in analyzing the status of your adaptive state. When stress overwhelms your nervous system, Heart Rate Variability is the perfect metric to benchmark your current status and report, with accuracy, the direction you are headed. You are either stuck in a “survival state” as witnessed by an Sympathetic-Dominant scan or achieving a “thrival state” of a well-balanced and fully charged autonomic nervous system.

A less-than-optimal nervous system doesn't adapt to stress as well as a clear, healthy and coherent nervous system does. You want to know that your nervous system has the adaptive reserve and ability to ramp up when it needs to AND to ramp back down when it doesn’t need to anymore. How does your nervous system adapt to internal or external stimuli?

Btw, healthy Heart Rate Variability scores are associated with positive emotions, so keep on loving! Let’s keep your inner heart happy and your nervous system optimized.

It’s important to measure and not just to guess.

SCHEDULE an appointment today to see how all the parts of your nervous system are working, and you’ll see if we can help you live your best, most clear life—inside and out.
