The Role of the Nervous System in Optimum Nutrition

You eat right, plenty of organic fruits and veggies, take supplements and superfoods… but did you know that your nervous systems has a role in optimum nutrition, and if your nervous system isn’t healthy, you’re not healthy??

A lot people think of pain when they are thinking about the nervous system, but that only makes up about 8-10% of the nervous system. The rest is all about the function of your body. But what could that possibly have to do with optimum nutrition? Because of our office’s reputation in Duluth, we often see people who are not your typical chiropractic clients. Of course we still see plenty of people with neck and back pain, and headaches, but we also see tons of people who are coming for reasons like fibromyalgia, fatigue, depression and anxiety, sleep issues and insomnia, immunity or autoimmune issues, and digestive complaints such as IBS, GERD and acid reflux, and Crohn’s. In addition many of the people who originally come because of pain, end up seeing shifts in other issues they have been having. Because that is just what happens when you have a clear and healthy nervous system.

For that reason I consider it my duty to help educate our community on the role of your nervous system (and therefore your spine as well) on optimal health. That includes it’s role in nutrition. Why is that important? Well, for one thing, if your body isn’t getting the nutrients it needs because of irritation that starts with your nervous system, it adds fuel to the unwellness fire. In addition to under-functioning nervous systems, even people who are eating healthy (which most aren’t) many are starting with sub-optimal nutritional levels because:

1. Conventional farming practices have stripped the earth (and our food) of nutrients

2. Due to over-farming, even organic vegetables (which have strikingly more vitamins and antioxidants than conventional) do not have the amount of nutrients we need to keep up

3. We live in a high-stress society which requires more and more nutrients due to the tax on our bodies

4. Common practices like processing, preserving, microwaving, cooking with high heat, and transportation time and distances further strip your food of its nutrients.

One of the most significant parts of your nervous system is your enteric nervous system. This gut network is responsible for digestion of your food, motility, stomach acid secretion, blood flow to the gut to gather the nutrients, opens and close the valves to and from your gut properly, and so much more. All this is just the beginning. To learn more about nervous system involvement in optimal nutrition, how to measure it, and what to do about it, schedule a visit on our website or attend:
